The Battle of Barrosa took place during the Peninsular War on 5 March 1811. It was fought near Cadiz, Spain, and involved British, Spanish, and Portuguese forces against the French. In January 1810, Cadiz, which had become the seat of the Spanish government since the French occupied Madrid, was besieged by French forces.
In March 1811, a reduction in the French army besieging Cadiz gave the British and Spanish forces an opportunity to attack and potentially end the siege. Under the command of Sir Thomas Graham, a combined force was sent to Tarifa. Aware of this plan, the French forces, under the command of Marshal Victor, redeployed troops to trap the allied forces.
The battle was fought on two fronts and both sides encountered fierce fighting. During the battle, a single British division defeated two French divisions and captured a regimental eagle. Though the allies were successful in routing the French attack, the lack of support from the Spanish prevented an absolute victory and the French were able to regroup. The siege remained until 24 August 1812.
