Civil registration in Canada is the responsibility of the individual provinces and territories. Registration did not become a standard practice until the late 1800s. In New Brunswick, civil registration really got underway in 1888, but there are some records that predate this time.
If you are interested in obtaining an official birth certificate, you will need to request it through Service New Brunswick at www.snb.ca. Birth certificates are available in both long and short form. The long form includes details about the child’s parents including names and place of birth. There is a fee associated with ordering a certificate.
If you don’t know the name of the ancestor you are looking for, try searching by a parent’s name (or both parents’ names).
Searching by parents’ names could lead to the discovery of as-yet unknown siblings to the ancestor you are researching.
